Position: full sun, partial shade or full shade Soil: any fertile, well-drained soil Rate of growth: slow Hardiness: fully hardy Needle-like, dark green leaves on horizontal branches and fleshy, cup-shaped, bright-red autumn fruits on female plants. The dark green foliage of this slow-growing, evergreen conifer provides an excellent background for shrub and herbaceous borders. Broadly conical in shape, it’s tolerant of dry shade, chalky and acid soils, and urban pollution. Yew also makes a fabulous, formal hedge and can be trained and clipped into topiary. Garden care: When planting, incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole and firm gently around the rootball before watering well. Water during dry spells in the first year, until established. If growing in containers, additional watering will be necessary. Prune or clip to shape in summer. Mature plants can tolerate hard pruning in spring, cutting back to the old wood. Apply a generous layer of mulch around the base of the plant (avoiding the immediate crown) in late winter.
