Huge bunches of brilliant red berries. Position: full sun or partial shade Soil: any well-drained soil Rate of growth: average Hardiness: fully hardy An old favourite which is a strong growing variety with small, good flavoured fruit and heavy yields. The flowers are produced later than most redcurrants and the branches tend to spread with age. All currants are easy to grow and perfect for all gardens as they are not fussy about soil or aspect. Small to medium, well-flavoured berries (mid-July). Space at 1.5m intervals and once planted apply a mulch of well-rotted manure every spring, as well as a nitrogen and potassium fertiliser. Make sure the plant is kept well watered in dry weather and net the bushes to protect the currants from birds. In the first year, prune back to one bud above soil level in winter. After that only prune out weak branches.
