The emerging leaves follow soon after, and these are initially pale green, but grow darker as they age. They add a further season of interest in the autumn, when they take on glorious shades of red and orange before being shed. This is what’s called a ‘top worked’ specimen, which basically means the crown has been grafted onto a 45cm tall upright stem that emerges from the rootstock. This gives the plant a more tree-like appearance, but it also limits the eventual height of the plant – making it ideal for patio pots or smaller gardens. Garden care: When planting incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole and stake firmly. Lightly prune in summer to retain the shape and cut back any dead, diseased or crossing branches.
