Its branches are laden with single, delicate white flowers in early spring – just before the strikingly variegated leaves start to emerge. This prolific display is impressive, as is the tree’s ability to maintain its compact form, making it particularly suitable for smaller gardens. It can also be potted up into a large container and kept on a sunny terrace, where you can enjoy the spectacle close-up. The multi-toned autumn colours the leaves turn before they drop are pretty good too! Garden care: When planting incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole and stake firmly. Prune in summer to reduce the risk of silver leaf and bacterial canker. Cut back any dead, diseased or crossing branches.
