This upright, columnar Japanese cherry is one of the best ornamental trees for a small garden. It will thrive in any soil but does need plenty of sunshine to flower well. Garden care: Plant as soon as conditions allow in soil that is not water-logged or frozen. When planting incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole and stake and support firmly. Prune in summer to reduce the risk of silver leaf and bacterial canker, cutting back any dead, diseased or crossing branches.
