A bright orange, summer-flowering tender perennial . Position: full sun Soil: moist but well-drained soil Rate of growth: average Flowering period: May to October Hardiness: half hardy (will need winter protection) First described in 1832 by German botanist Christian Friedrich Lessing, this perennial, also known as midday gold, originates from South Africa where it is a ground-hugging grassland species. This Gazania has lobed, lance-shaped leaves, shiny dark green on the outside, wooly white underneath. Bold and sassy, bright orange daisy-like flowers with a black basal spot, emerge in late spring and persist until the first frosts. Garden care: Pot up and grow on under glass until all risk of frost has passed and they can be planted outside in a well-prepared bed. Pinching out the growing tips will encourage them to become bushier, and feed with a high-potash fertiliser at regular intervals throughout the summer.
