A perennial wallflower plugs bedding plant with warm red spring flowers. Position: full sun or partial shade Soil: moderately fertile, well-drained, neutral to alkaline Rate of growth: average to fast Flowering period: March to June (and occasionally in winter) Hardiness: fully hardy (but short-lived) Upright clusters of warm red flowers add body and oomph to the planting scheme, while their delicious scent will fill the surrounding air. Supplied as jumbo seedlings, these F1 hybrids are tough and easy to grow, and they’ll often flower over several months, putting on a prolonged and colourful display. Grown individually in cell trays, each plant measures about 7 – 10cm tall (from the base of the root to the top of the plant). Garden care: Plant these jumbo seedlings straight out into well-prepared borders – or into pots filled with a good quality potting mix. Apply a generous layer of mulch and provide overnight cloche or fleece protection where frosts are very severe or prolonged. Once they start to flower, regular deadheading will help extend the display.
