An evergreen wall shrub with hanging clusters of vivid red flowers. Position: sun or partial shade Soil: rich, moist, well-drained soil Rate of growth: average Flowering period: July Hardiness: frost tender (will need winter protection) For those with coastal gardens or lovers of the sub-tropical comes this evergreen, scrambling shrub, suitable for mild areas or sunny, protected walls. With deep-red, curved keel petals reminiscent of a parrot’s bill or lobster’s claw, Clianthus makes an exotic addition to a sheltered garden spot. Garden care: Protect in winter by applying a thick layer of mulch to cover and help insulate the plant’s roots, and cover the plant with a layer of fleece during frosty weather. Provide a strong framework and tie in. After flowering, remove deadwood and cut back flowered shoots by up to a third to establish a robust flowering framework in subsequent years.
