An early, long blooming, scrambling climber. Position: full sun or partial shade Soil: fertile, well-drained, neutral soil Rate of growth: average Flowering period: May to June and September Hardiness: fully hardy This stunning early large-flowered (Group 2) Clematis produces huge, (up to 15cm wide) magenta pink flowers, with a reddish-purple bar on each petal that deepens to velvety violet-blue as they mature. A central tuft of purple anthers and white filaments crown the centre of each colourful blossom. ‘Wildfire’ is a very long blooming, scrambling climber, useful for covering trellises, fences, or climbing over other shrubs or small trees in a cottage garden. It requires little dead-heading, though giving them a light trim to encourage new growth often results in a secondary flowering later in the autumn. Garden care: Remove dead and damaged stems before growth begins in early spring, cutting all remaining stems back to where strong buds are visible. Apply a slow-release balanced fertiliser and a mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the base of the plant in early spring.
