A fast-growing climber to smother an ugly wall. Position: full sun or partial shade Soil: fertile, well-drained, neutral soil Rate of growth: fast-growing Flowering period: May to June Hardiness: fully hardy This recent introduction is slightly more compact than many of the other montanas, which makes it better suited to smaller gardens. Appearing at around the same time as the double, dusky pink flowers, the foliage emerges with a chocolate-purple flush, but this subdues as the leaves mature, first to bronze and then to green. It’s a showy, fast-growing climber that creates an impressive sight when fully laden with its abundance of late pring/early summer bloom. Garden care: No routine pruning is necessary. If the spread of the plant needs to be restricted prune immediately after flowering, cutting back overlong shoots to healthy buds. Apply a slow-release balanced fertiliser and a mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the base of the plant in early spring.
