A white flowering, group 3 clematis climber. Position: full sun or partial shade Soil: fertile, well-drained, neutral soil Rate of growth: fast-growing Flowering period: July to September Hardiness: fully hardy A mid to late summer, large-flowered white clematis with deeply textured, star-like, satin-like flowers up to 15cm (6”) across. On close inspection, ‘John Huxtable’ is a beautiful ‘Jackmanii-type’ clematis, bossed with central yellow stamens, best trained horizontally through a low-growing shrub, rose, or trellis in full sun or partial shade. Garden care: Climbing clematis need their roots to be kept cool and moist, so plant the base of these clematis in light shade or provide shading with other plants or a dressing of pebbles. In early spring cut back the previous year’s stems to a pair of strong buds about 15-20cm (6-8in) above ground-level and apply a slow-release balanced fertiliser and a mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the plant, avoiding the immediate crown.
