Forms a low mound, with masses of summer flowers. Position: full sun or partial shade Soil: fertile, well-drained soil, neutral soil Rate of growth: average Flowering period: May to September Hardiness: fully hardy Unlike most of the other clematis, this compact, non-climbing form creates a leafy mound, which over a long period from late spring, is topped with showy violet flowers. It’s ideal for spilling over the edges of a pot or hanging basket, but it can also be used to soften the edges of a border – or add some long-lasting colour to a rockery. Garden care: In early spring cut back the previous year’s stems to a pair of strong buds about 15-20cm (6-8in) above ground level and apply a slow-release balanced fertiliser and a mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the plant, avoiding the immediate crown.
