A highly unusual deciduous climber . Position: sun or partial shade Soil: rich, moist, well-drained soil Rate of growth: average to fast Flowering period: July Hardiness: fully hardy An unusual deciduous climber, commonly referred to as the Dutchman’s Pipe, native to Eastern United States and parts of Ontario, Canada. With magnificent flowers that resemble the shape of a Dutch pipe, the blooms appear in summer and are mid-green, 2.5cm across and mottled yellow, purple and brown. Each flower releases a heady scent which attracts pollinating insects that are temporarily trapped by fine hairs within the throat of the flower. Once pollination occurs, the flower begins to degrade, allowing the insect to escape. This curious and strong-growing, deciduous climber is perfect for screening walls and fences. Garden care: Provide a strong support and prune to fit the available space after flowering has finished.
