At around the same time, fresh new foliage also starts to appear, initially a bright coppery pink, but turning mid-green as it develops fully. In summer, small black fruits appear, and these can be used for jams, jellies or pies, but then in autumn the foliage turns butter yellow and red-flushed in autumn before it is shed. It’s a fine tree that will offer several seasons of interest throughout the year. Garden care: Remove dead, damaged or crossing branches in late winter or early spring.
